Earliest childhood memory?
As a boy, I was quite mischievous and loved to play in the backyard, which often led to my parents chasing me around. My father and grandfather owned a boatshed in Watsons Bay, which is now Doyle’s seafood restaurant, and I spent a lot of my time swimming, diving and playing on the beach.
What was your career like?
I started my career as a printer when I was only 15 years old, using old and original printing techniques. Eventually, I became a tradesman and moved on to work at the Daily Mirror. I even volunteered for the night shift at the Australian newspaper, where I worked on the very first edition of ‘The Australian’ newspaper on July 15, 1964. I was a perfectionist and took great pride in my work. In 1988, I was nominated by my peers at the Australian newspaper to compete in a competition held by NAPP, where I went up against 222 other printing companies for the title of ‘Best Printer in the world.’ I was thrilled to win the category of ‘The World’s Best Printer,’ and The Australian newspaper (News Limited) won the NAPP 1988 ‘Best in the World Print Quality Award’ because of the best quality paper and inks we used. As technology changed, the printing press was eventually shut down, and the newspaper relocated from Kippax Street, Surry Hills to Chullora. My time at News Limited came to an end when I retired in 1994.
