Arturo, who prefers to go by the name Arthur, was born in the beautiful city of Valparaiso in Chile. It is a charming port city known for its colourful cliff top homes, very steep cable railways, and the famous Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. It is locally known as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’ and is also a UNESCO World Heritage City.
Growing up, Arthur was surrounded by a large family. “I had two brothers and two sisters, who have now sadly passed away,” said Arthur, reminiscing. But he has such fond memories of his hometown, playing with neighbours and friends on the streets of the city where he grew up. His favourite memory, though, is of his dogs - Wilson, Dick, and Ronnie - who all hold a very special place in his heart and will never be forgotten.
Arthur has a love of travelling. When asked what his favourite destination was, he said, “The best place I’ve travelled to is New Zealand. It is a beautiful country and the people are very laid back,” he said with a smile, then added, “Of course I would say my other favourite place is Chile, where I am from. It is a very happy, friendly country with amazing sunny weather, lots of people, great food, beer and Latin music - some of my favourite things.”
Leaving his hometown, Arthur travelled with friends to Australia. They arrived in the1970s - at a time of great debate and social change, and an ever growing multicultural society. “I lived in Kingsford for many years and I have two children, Natalie and Mathew, who I am very proud of.”
When asked to describe himself, Arthur said sincerely, “I would consider myself a very straight-up and honest person. You can ask me anything and I will answer. I have nothing to hide as I am a very open person.” We then asked how his friends and family would describe him, Arthur smiled and said, “Happy, mentally strong, and friendly. I love to have a good laugh and a cheeky joke.”
When it came to work, Arthur spent most of his working years as a taxi driver. “It was interesting as it allowed you to meet different types of people and learn a lot of useful and not so useful things, especially bad jokes that I can't say here,” said Arthur with a wink and a smile.
Arthur now calls SummitCare Randwick home. “I have been here for two years now and it feels like home. Everyone here is friendly and I enjoy having a good chat with them,” said Arthur with a genuine care for the people around him. “I like to help around the home by collecting and delivering the mail to staff, and opening the door for people and having a chat with them. I like making everyone feel welcome.”
